Job Summary

  • This one year training program is for recent or soon to be high school graduates and alternative school graduates to learn about state government, highway maintenance and construction work.
  • Trainees receive hands-on training in basic highway maintenance, safety rules, job hazard assessments, radio communication, crash response, flagging, first aid, and CDL training.
  • As a full-time limited duration employee, you are eligible for health benefits, sick leave, paid holidays, retirement benefits after six months, and participation in the Oregon Savings Growth Plan.

Key Requirements

  • high school diploma or GED between Jan 1, 2023 and July 1, 2026
  • maximum 30 minute response time to La Grande, OR location
  • ability to obtain Class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire
  • must be at least 18 years old by Sept 1, 2026
  • one year driving experience required
  • valid Oregon driver license at time of hire
  • ability to obtain CDL-A with tanker endorsement within six months or possess valid CDL-A with endorsements
  • acceptable driving record and pre-employment driving checks
